Sine balustrade

Sine balustrade

Balustrades are most frequently seen from an angle when looking up to a building or when walking along the railings. Would it be possible to create a design that looks especially interesting under these conditions and that changes appearance when the viewing angle changes.

A steel flatbar is very straight and linear and does not lend itself to organic free-form designs. The Sine balustrade is an experiment to break these limitations without complex manufacturing processes. When viewed together, the rows of twisted bars create the visual appearance of a complex wavy surface that could otherwise be only produced with considerable effort. Twisted rectangular steel bars are a common element of decoration in traditional blacksmithing. The Sine balustrade uses this ancient technique in a total different and modern way.
