Greenpower Fontwell, West Sussex [GB]

This MindStep™ staircase was created for the headquarters of The Greenpower Education Trust in Fontwell, West Sussex. The setting is especially apt: Greenpower encourages young people aged 11 to 24 to design, build and race electric cars, making the stair a finely judged expression of engineering, velocity and sustainable purpose.

Designed by Geoff Packer, architectural specialist at EeStairs, the staircase has a carved, almost aerodynamic character. Its laminated bamboo treads and extended risers form a rippling underside, giving the structure a dynamic sense of movement. The key technical challenge was to maintain exact alignment between the complex stepped geometry, the vertical balustrade elements and the handrail. EeStairs resolved this through precise detailing and disciplined fabrication, allowing the form to remain visually calm despite its sculptural complexity.

The material strategy is central to the project’s integrity. Laminated bamboo was chosen for its strength, stability and sustainable credentials, while the metal handrail provides a crisp, durable counterpoint. The result is not simply a staircase, but a crafted architectural engine for an organisation devoted to future-facing design.
