EeStairs + Fennick McCredie Architecture

In the lobby of the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, a sculptural stair designed by Fennick McCredie Architecture forms the centrepiece of the interior. The stair’s clean geometry and perforated balustrades create a sense of movement and lightness within the concrete and glass surroundings. It reads less as a piece of circulation and more as an architectural statement—calm, fluid, and precisely detailed.

A key challenge for EeStairs was the integration of full-height mild steel balustrades with a central and twin side stringer structure. The perforated pattern, cut into the balustrades, required exact alignment across all surfaces, particularly where the stair folds into the curved mezzanine opening. This demanded high-precision fabrication and installation techniques to ensure visual continuity, as well as structural integrity beneath the cast stone treads and risers.

The most striking element may be the soffit: a series of 3D-printed polycarbonate panels reinforced with carbon fibre. These were machined and hand-finished to match the stair’s curves, producing a seamless underside that echoes the balustrade’s sweep. Paired with solid mahogany handrails and powder-coated steel, the materials express both warmth and clarity—hallmarks of EeStairs’ approach to modern craftsmanship.
