EeStairs + Formhet
This elegantly sculptural helical staircase, designed by formhet, is the spatial centrepiece of a private residence in 's-Gravenzande. The architecture presents a harmonious interplay of natural textures and rigorous geometry – a duality that is captured by the sweeping white form of the staircase, set against rustic stone walls and heavy timber beams. The staircase and adjoining bridge appear to hover through the main living area, their weightlessness made possible by precise structural integration. A key technical challenge lay in ensuring the torsional rigidity of the free-spanning stair and bridge without compromising on elegance. EeStairs resolved this by constructing the balustrades and soffits from custom-formed steel plates, which serve both as structural elements and visual surfaces. The soffits were finished with EeSoffit™, a seamless, fine-textured coating that enhances the staircase’s sculptural fluidity.
Oak treads, treated with a clear oil, introduce warmth to the otherwise minimal palette. The handrail, crafted from solid oak and lacquered, was meticulously curved to match the continuous inner line. This project exemplifies EeStairs’ mastery in fusing structural precision with sculptural refinement.
