The Frick Collection, New York [US]
EeStairs + Selldorf Architects + Sciame Construction, LLC
The Frick Collection in New York is one of the world’s most important art museums, with more than 1500 individual works dating from the Renaissance to the late 19th century. The building’s $220 million (€194m) renovation was led by Selldorf Architects, supported by executive architects Beyer Blinder Belle.A key part of the renovation was the redesign of the main reception hall, featuring a new staircase made by EeStairs, encased in Breccia Aurora blue marble. The stairs take visitors up to a new floor, created by lowering the original ceiling of the reception space.
EeStairs used historic hand-crafting skills and wood jigs rather than hi-tech systems to make the radiused balustrade corner panels and curved steel balustrade rails. The flat balustrade panels house 3/8-inch glass and received wax coatings to accentuate their patina.
